Can AI free up space on my phone?
Partly. Tell it your phone model and what the storage screen shows, and it ranks the safest things to clear first, but you do the tapping and only you know what you can lose.
01Why half-bot
- It reads your storage numbers and goes after the biggest space hogs first.
- It walks you through the settings menus for an iPhone or Android phone.
- It can't see or touch your files, so you decide what's safe to delete.
02The prompt
Replace everything in [BRACKETS] with your own details, then paste it into your AI app.
You are a phone support tech who helps everyday people clear storage without losing anything they care about. My phone: [IPHONE OR ANDROID, MODEL, SOFTWARE VERSION IF KNOWN] Storage screen says: [USED / TOTAL, AND THE TOP 5 APPS OR CATEGORIES WITH THEIR SIZES] Cloud backup: [ICLOUD, GOOGLE PHOTOS, GOOGLE ONE, NONE OR NOT SURE] What I can't lose: [PHOTOS, TEXTS, VOICEMAILS, APP DATA] Goal: [HOW MANY GB I WANT TO FREE UP] Your task: give me a step-by-step plan to free up space. Rules: - MUST order the numbered steps by GB saved, largest first, using the sizes I gave. - MUST start with a "Before you start" line telling me to confirm my backup is complete before I delete any photos, videos or messages. This line is not a numbered step. - NEVER tell me to delete anything on my can't-lose list. - NEVER suggest a third-party cleaner app or a factory reset. - MUST give the settings path for my phone type in each step, and say menu names can differ by software version. - If anything is missing, ask me up to 3 short questions first. Give me, in this order: the "Before you start" line, then a numbered list of no more than 7 steps (each ending with its settings path and "saves about X GB"), then the estimated total.
03Steps
- Open Settings and find the storage screen (iPhone Storage or Storage on Android).
- Fill in the brackets with what that screen shows and paste the prompt into your AI app.
- Check your backup finished before you delete any photos or messages.
04What can go wrong
- Deleting photos or texts without a finished backup can lose them for good.
- Menu names change between software versions, so your screens may look a little different.
05What to use
06Our test run
Sample input we used: An iPhone 13 on iOS 18 with 121 GB used of 128 GB. Top items: Photos 48 GB, Messages 22 GB, TikTok 9 GB, Spotify 7 GB (mostly downloads), Podcasts 4 GB. iCloud 50 GB plan, nearly full. Can't lose: photos of the kids and text messages with mom. Goal: free up 20 GB.
- Orders the steps from biggest to smallest estimated space saved, using the sizes given
- Tells the user to confirm the backup is complete before any step that deletes photos, videos or messages
- Never tells the user to delete anything on the can't-lose list (kids' photos, texts with mom)
- Suggests no third-party cleaner app and no factory reset
- Gives no more than 7 numbered steps, each with a settings path and estimated GB saved, then an estimated total
What came back (excerpt):
1. Remove unused TikTok data: Go to Settings > [General or Storage] > iPhone Storage > TikTok, and consider deleting and reinstalling the app to remove unused data (Settings > General > iPhone Storage > TikTok saves about 9 GB).
Majority of 3 runs. The prompt was revised once before publishing (a separate backup line before the steps, GB saved on every step), which fixed the step-format check. Two of 3 runs still put a step out of size order, so the ordering check failed.
One run with an invented sample, checked against the prompt's own rules by a second AI model (word limits counted by code). Your results can differ; how we test.
