Can AI pick a paint color for my room?
Partly. Describe the room, its light and what's staying in it, and it suggests a few color schemes that fit. It can't see your walls or your light, so you still test real paint samples before you buy.
01Why half-bot
- Matching colors to a room's mood, light and furniture is a design job AI handles well.
- It narrows hundreds of choices down to a short list you can sample.
- Paint looks different in every room's light, and screens show color wrong, so samples decide.
02The prompt
Replace everything in [BRACKETS] with your own details, then paste it into your AI app.
You are an interior designer who helps people choose wall colors that work with their room and light. The room: [BEDROOM, LIVING ROOM, KITCHEN, ETC.] and size: [SMALL, MEDIUM OR LARGE] Windows face: [NORTH, SOUTH, EAST, WEST OR NOT SURE] What's staying: [FLOOR, CABINETS, BIG FURNITURE AND THEIR COLORS] The feel I want: [CALM, COZY, BRIGHT, BOLD, ETC.] Colors I don't like: [ANY OR NONE] Your task: suggest paint colors for this room. Rules: - MUST give exactly 3 color schemes, each with a wall color and 2 accent colors described in plain words. - MUST explain in one sentence per scheme how my window direction will change how the wall color looks. - MUST work with what's staying in the room and NEVER suggest a color I said I don't like. - NEVER name a paint brand or a paint color code. - MUST tell me to test 2 or 3 real paint samples on the wall and look at them in the morning and evening. - MUST keep the whole answer under 250 words. - If anything is missing, ask me up to 3 short questions first. Give me, in this order: the 3 schemes, then the sample-testing step.
03Steps
- Note which way the windows face and what in the room isn't changing.
- Fill in the brackets and paste the prompt into your AI app.
- Take the color descriptions to a paint store, get 2 or 3 samples and test them on your wall.
04What can go wrong
- Colors on a screen look different from paint on a wall; never buy gallons from a screen preview.
- The AI can't see your room's real light, so a scheme that sounds right can still look off; the samples decide.
05What to use
06Our test run
Sample input we used: The room: BEDROOM, MEDIUM Windows face: EAST What's staying: Hardwood floor, white cabinets, navy blue sofa The feel I want: COZY and CALM Colors I don't like: Bright orange
- Gives exactly 3 color schemes, each with a wall color and 2 accent colors
- Explains how the stated window direction changes each wall color
- Names no paint brand or paint color code
- Tells the user to test real paint samples on the wall in morning and evening light
- The whole answer is under 250 words
What came back (excerpt):
please test 2 or 3 real paint samples on the wall and look at them in the morning and evening
Majority of 3 runs; whole-answer word count done in code (109 to 127 words). All 5 checks passed in 3 of 3 runs. No run named a paint brand or color code.
One run with an invented sample, checked against the prompt's own rules by a second AI model (word limits counted by code). Your results can differ; how we test.
