Can AI replace Typeform?

A one-question form UI is easy, but Typeform's respondent UX, templates, analytics, integrations, anti-spam, payments, and scale justify a kinda.

Hidden costs: Contacts & Automations add-ons cost $25/month for 2,400 actions or $75/month for 12,000 actions, with plan eligibility restrictions; response add-on rates are not public; counters reset monthly even on annual plans; the Growth trial requires a card and can auto-convert to paid.

02Could AI build it for you?

The core job: Build a form schema/editor, render one question at a time, store responses, export CSV, and send webhooks.

What a working version needs:

  • hosted backend
  • database
  • form builder UI
  • webhook/email service
  • optional Stripe integration

Useful because Typeform is easy to demo but hard to match in conversion polish.

03What you'd give up

  • template quality
  • completion UX
  • analytics
  • integrations
  • conditional logic polish
  • payments
  • spam controls

They pay because the form looks good and converts without custom QA.

HeyFormopen-source

Typeform's manners, minus the monthly rent

Versus paying: Its templates, visual refinement, analytics and integration ecosystem are less polished than Typeform's.

Typebotfree

Conversational forms with serious branching; free to self-host under a fair-source licence

Versus paying: Its chatbot-first builder is excellent for branching conversations but weaker for conventional surveys, quizzes, reporting and Typeform-style presentation.

typebot.io →
Tallyfree

A generous hosted form builder with logic and unlimited responses; branding is the upsell

Versus paying: Its free product is generous, but the presentation is less distinctly one-question-at-a-time and branding, custom domains and some team controls are paid.

OpnFormopen-source

Open-source forms with unlimited respondents; the free self-hosted builder team stops at two

Versus paying: Its conversational presentation, template polish, analytics and integration breadth are less mature than Typeform's.

05The build prompt

Paste this into an AI coding tool (such as Claude, ChatGPT, Lovable or Replit) to build your own version.

prompt.txt
Build me a one-question-at-a-time survey app to replace Typeform, personal scale. Requirements:

- Node + Express + better-sqlite3 on my VPS behind Caddy. A form is a YAML file in
forms/ (types: text, email, select, rating 1-5, yes/no), loaded at request time.
  No visual builder.
- Public page at /s/<slug>: one question on screen, large type, Enter or click to
advance, up arrow to go back, progress bar, thank-you screen. Vanilla JS, no
  framework, works on a phone.
- Simple branching: a question may declare next: per answer. One level deep, do not
  build a logic engine.
- Responses saved on completion to SQLite with timestamp and form version.
- CSV export at /admin/<slug>.csv behind an ADMIN_TOKEN from .env; optional webhook
POST per completed response, URL set in the form's YAML.
- Honeypot field and a per-IP rate limit for spam, nothing fancier.
- No accounts, no telemetry; respondent data stays in my SQLite file.
- Out of scope: a drag-and-drop editor, payments, analytics dashboards, and
partial-response capture. Adding a form means dropping a YAML file on the server.
- README: Caddy snippet and the YAML form format with one full example.
