Can AI replace QuillBot?
A paraphraser/summarizer/grammar wrapper over an LLM and LanguageTool is easy to build; the paid app wins on UX, extensions, plagiarism workflows, and bundled tools.
01What it costs

Hidden costs: Premium's 25,000 monthly plagiarism words do not roll over. Extra packs cost $2.45 for 6,250 words, $8.95 for 25,000, or $19.95 for 62,500; purchased packs roll over until used.
02Could AI build it for you?
The core job: Create text boxes for paraphrase/summarize/grammar, call an LLM and LanguageTool, and save/export outputs.
What a working version needs:
- LLM API
- LanguageTool or grammar API
- browser extension if in-app writing is needed
Great yes candidate: wrapper-heavy, high willingness to cancel.
03What you'd give up
- browser/Word extensions
- plagiarism/AI detector workflows
- rewrite modes
- history
- polish
- account sync
They pay because it is available where they write and has purpose-built controls.
04Free and cheaper alternatives
Proofread, rewrite, shorten, or change tone almost anywhere, assuming your Apple hardware made the guest list.
Versus paying: It covers basic proofreading and rewriting, but lacks QuillBot's dedicated paraphrase modes, synonym controls, citation tools, and broad cross-platform availability.
support.apple.com →A browser sidebar that reads the page, rewrites the selection, and saves custom actions; your local model does the thinking.
Versus paying: It can paraphrase with a local model, but it lacks QuillBot's predictable modes, sentence-level controls, grammar suite, and citation workflow.
pageassist.xyz →System-wide selected-text commands, reusable experts, a scratchpad, and document context; bring the model and skip the subscription.
Versus paying: It can run rewrite commands anywhere, but results depend on prompts and models rather than QuillBot's purpose-built paraphrase controls and writing-tool suite.
witsyai.com →Select text anywhere, hit a hotkey, and fix, rewrite, summarize, or obey a custom instruction without opening another tab.
Versus paying: It handles selected-text rewrites well, but lacks QuillBot's structured paraphrasing modes, synonym controls, citation generator, and integrated editor.

Paste this into an AI coding tool (such as Claude, ChatGPT, Lovable or Replit) to build your own version.
Build me a local paraphrasing and grammar tool to replace QuillBot. Requirements: - A local web page on localhost:5170: Node + Express, one textarea in, one output pane, buttons for Paraphrase, Summarize, Fix grammar, and a tone select (standard, formal, casual, shorter). - Paraphrase, summarize, and tone modes call an LLM (Anthropic or OpenAI key in .env) with a fixed prompt per mode; stream the output. - Grammar mode calls a local LanguageTool server and lists each issue with its suggested fix, click to apply. No LLM needed for grammar. - A diff view between input and output with word-level highlights (the `diff` npm package). - Every run saved to SQLite via better-sqlite3: timestamp, mode, input, output. A history page lists the last 100 with copy buttons. - Cmd+Enter runs the selected mode. - No accounts, no telemetry; text leaves my machine only for LLM calls, grammar checking stays fully local. - Out of scope: browser and Word extensions, plagiarism and AI detection. This lives in one tab. - README: LanguageTool setup (needs Java or Docker) and which API key to add.
06Open-source starting points
- LanguageTool: Open-source grammar/style checking engine useful for a QuillBot-lite clone.
