Can AI replace EdrawMax?
The visible general diagramming loop is buildable, but a credible replacement needs more than the first screen. EdrawMax earns its keep through interaction polish, collaboration, so expect a weekend or multi-day build and a narrower personal scope.
01What it costs

| Plan | Monthly | Billed yearly | What you get |
|---|---|---|---|
| Free Trial | Free | Free | 2 built-in templates plus 2 local and 2 cloud templates; 500 AI tokens; 5 recycle-bin items retained 7 days; up to 60 shapes in a general diagram; 5 Visio/CAD imports; exported files are watermarked |
| Semi-Annual | — | — | Desktop on up to 3 PCs plus 3 mobile devices and online access; 1 GB cloud storage |
| Annual | — | $8.25/mo | Desktop on up to 3 PCs plus 3 mobile devices and online access; 1 GB cloud storage |
| Perpetual | — | — | Current major desktop version on up to 3 PCs; mobile/web access for 3 years; 10 GB cloud storage |
Hidden costs: The optional EdrawMax AI Assets checkbox starts with a 7-day trial and then auto-renews as a separate subscription at a price not cleanly exposed. Perpetual covers the purchased major desktop version and only 3 years of mobile/web access; subscription payments are not credited toward a perpetual license.
02Could AI build it for you?
The core job: Build a browser-based general diagramming editor with drag, resize, connect, keyboard shortcuts, autosave, and SVG or PNG export.
What a working version needs:
- Node.js 22
- modern browser
- no account required
Useful boundary case: the first 60 percent of EdrawMax is approachable, but operating the last 40 percent is the real subscription.
03What you'd give up
- large template libraries
- high-fidelity import and export
- presentation and enterprise controls
- multiplayer cursors and comments
EdrawMax: The shapes are easy; customers pay for low-friction editing, reliable exports, collaboration, and a canvas that never fights them.
04Free and cheaper alternatives
The unglamorous diagram workhorse: huge template coverage, local files, imports, automatic layouts, and collaboration through shared storage.
app.diagrams.net →Excellent automatic layout and plenty of business and technical diagrams; less template theatre, more getting boxes aligned.

Paste this into an AI coding tool (such as Claude, ChatGPT, Lovable or Replit) to build your own version.
Build a deliberately narrow personal substitute for EdrawMax, not a full clone. Use exactly this stack: React + TypeScript + Vite + IndexedDB. Primary job: Build a browser-based general diagramming editor with drag, resize, connect, keyboard shortcuts, autosave, and SVG or PNG export. Start from an empty folder and create the complete working project. Make the default mode single-user and private. Store user data locally unless the core job requires the declared self-hosted database. Do not add analytics, telemetry, ads, or third-party accounts. Put every secret and external credential in .env and provide .env.example. Use realistic sample data that is clearly labelled and easy to delete. Implement the smallest polished interface that completes the core loop end to end. Include clear empty, loading, validation, success, and failure states. Add import and export so the user is not trapped in the app. Use accessible keyboard navigation, labels, focus states, and sensible contrast. Validate untrusted input and never log secrets or private file contents. Deliberately exclude these paid-product advantages: large template libraries; high-fidelity import and export; presentation and enterprise controls. Do not fake integrations, network effects, proprietary data, model quality, compliance, or security claims. Where an external API is optional, keep the app useful without it and explain the degraded mode. Write focused unit tests for the data model and the most important workflow. Add one end-to-end smoke test that proves the core loop works. Create a README with setup, permissions, architecture, data location, backup, and limitations. Add scripts for install, development, test, build, and a production-style local run. Run the tests and build before finishing, then fix errors rather than merely describing them.
