Can AI replace Bubble?

A specific Bubble app is often vibecodable now; rebuilding Bubble's editor, workflow engine, plugin ecosystem, hosting, and scaling layer is not.

01What it costs

$708per year at that price

PlanMonthlyBilled yearlyWhat you get
Free, Web & MobileFreeFree1 editor; 50,000 workload units/month; 6 hours server logs; development version only
Starter, Web & Mobile—$59/mo1 editor; 175,000 workload units/month; 2 days logs; 5 mobile build submissions/month; 3 live app versions
Growth, Web & Mobile—$209/mo2 editors; 250,000 workload units/month; 14 days logs; 10 branches; 10 build submissions; 5 live versions
Team, Web & Mobile—$549/mo5 editors; 500,000 workload units/month; 20 days logs; 25 branches; 20 build submissions; 8 live versions
Enterprise——Custom workload, hosting region, server, build and support limits

Hidden costs: Workload units are the real meter and web + mobile share one allowance; overage or prepaid workload tiers cost extra, storage is $3 per additional 100 GB/month, and paid plugin subscriptions are separate

02Could AI build it for you?

The core job: Rebuild the target app directly in code with CRUD, auth, workflows, and hosting rather than cloning Bubble as a platform.

What a working version needs:

  • web framework
  • database
  • auth
  • hosting
  • payment/email APIs
  • product-specific integrations

One of the site's most important explanatory pages: build the app, not the platform.

03What you'd give up

  • visual editor
  • workflow builder
  • plugin marketplace
  • hosting/scaling
  • nondeveloper maintenance
  • templates

They pay because future changes can be made visually without owning a codebase.

04Free and cheaper alternatives

Budibaseopen-source

Custom web apps with data, forms, screens, and automations; design freedom is far below Bubble's.

Versus paying: Budibase's component and layout system is optimized for internal business screens and is far less flexible for polished public consumer interfaces than Bubble.

budibase.com →
Cortezaopen-source

A self-hosted business-app suite with records, pages, workflows, charts, and enterprise-grade amounts of configuration.

Versus paying: Corteza is a record-and-workflow suite, not a pixel-flexible public web-app designer, so a consumer-facing Bubble product will look and behave much more constrained.

cortezaproject.org →
Joget Community Editionopen-source

Forms, lists, workflows, and role-aware apps from a product old enough to have survived several no-code fashions.

Versus paying: Joget excels at forms and workflows but cannot approach Bubble's freedom for bespoke public-facing layouts, interactions, and responsive design.

joget.org →
NocoBaseopen-source

A full database-backed web-app builder with pages, roles, actions, workflows, and plugins; more business app than consumer startup.

Versus paying: NocoBase is fundamentally a database-backed administrative app builder, so it gives up Bubble's consumer-app design freedom and front-end plugin ecosystem.

nocobase.com →
REI3open-source

A sober business-app builder with forms, reports, roles, workflows, and no per-user meter.

Versus paying: REI3's utilitarian forms, reports, and pages are a poor substitute for Bubble's highly customized public front ends and interaction design.

05The build prompt

Paste this into an AI coding tool (such as Claude, ChatGPT, Lovable or Replit) to build your own version.

prompt.txt
Build me the app I currently run on Bubble, as plain code I own. Requirements:

- First ask me for: the 3-5 core screens, the data types with their fields,
and the single workflow that matters most. Rebuild that app, not Bubble.
- Stack: Node + Express + better-sqlite3, server-rendered EJS templates plus
htmx for interactivity. No SPA framework, no build step.
- CRUD for each data type: list page with search and filters, detail page,
create and edit forms with validation.
- Workflows become plain functions: a form submit updates rows, sends email
via Resend (key in .env), redirects. Scheduled workflows become node-cron
  jobs in the same process.
- Auth only if people other than me log in: email+password sessions with
bcrypt and a session cookie, no roles unless I named them. If it is just
me, skip auth and bind to localhost.
- File uploads go to uploads/, images resized with sharp.
- One SQLite file plus a nightly CSV dump of every table, data never trapped.
- Out of scope: a visual editor, a plugin system, anything platform-shaped.
The deliverable is one app that deploys with node server.js on a $5 VPS.
- README: deploy steps and how to add a field later, the code is the editor
  now.
